The Face of Blame

about

April 2020. Going through unfinished songs in this lockdown. One of the few I've written on the piano. I had the opening line for years with the chord pattern but couldn't grasp the story . Then in Trump's recent tirades against the Chinese and everybody else who criticizes him it fitted into place. This was around Easter and I was l was also thinking about how Jesus was the focus of hate and blame by the hypocrites at that time which led to his death along with the myriad other stories in history of groups or individuals being scapegoated. It seems such a fundamental aspect of human nature to blame.

lyrics

THE FACE OF BLAME

They fashioned him in glass
The leader of the class
The people bowed and prayed
To the image they had made
His death ship cloys the shore
Contagion stalks his floor
A sneer upon his face
His acolytes will praise

So name the prophet, name the priest
Name the colour of his creed
Then blame the weal upon my skin
Blame the womb she bore me in
But the face of blame will raise its sunken eyes, stare at you again

A baby at her breast
The soft tones of his breath
A holy dove in flight
Still waters bathed in light
An outstretched healing palm
'Before Abraham I am...'
Temptation’s bitter hour
A blood-stained ragged tower

So name the prophet, name the priest
Name the colour of his creed
Blame the weals upon his skin
Blame the womb she bore him in
But the face of blame will raise its sunken eyes, stare at you again
