DREAMING ADAM

about

'Very contemplative...beautiful....' Iain Anderson BBC Radio Scotland

I bought an album by Irish singer Maz O'Connor and was listening to her track about the Mississippi Woman, 'an alternative creation myth, sort of a reversed Adam and Eve, starting from the creation of the woman” she has explained. It got me thinking about a song I have been wrestling with for years. I had the guitar part but didn't have a clue about the subject matter apart from the first line 'She didn't live in that house long…and the line 'About the boy… From then on it fitted into place and the song became about a woman imagining her unknown lover or her boy child yet to be born or Adam being created from Eve...

lyrics

DREAMING ADAM

She didn't live in that house long
Just time enough to write a song
At first the words refused to rhyme
In shapes that tear, no thoughts combined

About the boy
His nascent beauty
Her search for joy

Across the roof a garden gleams
A haven for her furtive dream
In a mountain range, a valley steep
To course into on wings of sleep

To find the boy
His nascent beauty
Her search for joy

Ethan my boy
Ethan my dear boy

A river flows, a shelter stands
She clears her throat, he holds her hands
A sentence forms, a figure leaps
Tempestuous infant from the deep

Creates the boy
His nascent beauty
Her search for joy

Ethan my boy
Ethan my dear boy
