ANGELINE

by David Heavenor

/

about

The song was originally called The Source which I started writing in Dublin Street Baptist Church in Edinburgh when I visited some friends who were in a band called Ever After. We did a version in our band Cahoots with Ricky stomping out a classic piano part . (still have a recording) Worked on a version on a 4 track cassette machine on which this version is based on Garage band. Wrote a new chorus and two different middle eight sections. It's actually based on a dream I had about a girl who I was enamoured with and we did stand on a clifftop only for me to be bumped into the sea below.

lyrics

ANGELINE

The shadows threw darts in the sky
And the life in my thoughts had run dry
I knew all at once, dread winter had come
I took one last look in your eyes
And I saw in a glance light was dying
I knew all at once, dread winter had come

Oh Angeline, I'm laughing now
Oh Angelie, I'm crying
Your face shining through these crowds
Beguiles me

Little sister you came to my eyes
As aloof as the stars in the sky
We stood on a cliff until we made a pledge
And just as I gave you my trust
In embrace your soft eyes turned to dust
And with a swing of your hips, you pushed me off the ledge

You taught me to sing, then you taught me to sigh
You broke the truth on the back of a lie
You laid all your gifts at the feet of the king
But your allegiance flew like chaff in the vaulting sky

We stood on the cliff in the night,
Caught up in a storm fractured light
Never before had we seen the world open wide
The silence came with a crash
And the sight of the sea made us gasp
So we threw ourselves into the saving tide

You can wrap her in sails, wrap her in silence
Fling round the cusp of the sea
You can wrap her in veils, in ice and in incense
But the lingering lines of her lithesome dark skin lives in me
Lives in me
Lives in me
LIves in me
