BALLAD FOR THE BLUES

by David Heavenor

/

about

Another song drawn up from the archive well from my twenties in Edinburgh. Never recorded it and can't think I ever performed it, certainly not in recent years. Based on a number of characters I knew who were hugely talented people but locked into the cynicism of that age and caught up in a kind of miasma of self. Looking at the original lyric, (which had more verses too bad to include here) I wrote it in Warrender Park Terrace and Panmure Place where I was renting a room.

lyrics

BALLAD FOR THE BLUES

The way you sit there composing yourself
Relaxed in your boredom like some waxed print on a shelf
I catch the cold inflection in your daydream voice
It’s just some leaden inspiration, you’ve given up your choice

It comes as a habit, it’s what spent men will crave,
By it they are worshipping, by it they are saved
But you’ll never admit it trapped in your maze of word plays
You spurned the light of my friendship, you kept me far away

Did the weary world traveler call round for your soul?
Dragging his weather torn boots and his eyes black as coal
Or did you rise to your window where the dawn fire was flowing
Into your deepest self moment, into the gift of your seeing?
