GOD INSIDE YOUR SKIN

about

I attended a few funerals for friends and relatives who died before their time and it comes with a terrible sense of injustice and futility. I've got to believe there is a different order at work in our lives but it's not in plain sight. I love Charles Causley's poem about a friend's funeral. '

Over the church a bell broke like a wave upended
The hearse left for winter with a lingering hiss
I looked in the wet sky for a sign but no bird descended
I went across the road to the pub; wrote this..'

From Death of a Poet

lyrics

GOD INSIDE YOUR SKIN

I remember those few words you said
I wont wake up until I'm dead
And your eyes were blue
The deepest blue
I saw God inside your skin
He grabbed my arm
I felt your suffering
Like people do
Like all the people do

Walking into Ainslie Place
Not a smile on any mortal face
But your eyes shone through
Incandescent blue
These walls wont hold you in here
No these walls wont keep you in here

I climbed a stair, rang a bell
The doctor winced, said all is not well
And his eyes glazed grey
Grey as your ash now mixing in the bay
How serious we all process
In our gilded grief and artifice
I kiss a hollow kiss
Girl you're well, well out of this

Walking into Ainslie Place
Not a smile on any mortal face
But your eyes shone through
Incandescent blue
These walls wont hold you in here
No these walls wont keep you in here
