MANY NAILS AND GOLD

about

A song which I vaguely knew I had somewhere but have never revisited. Written when I was 24 in Edinburgh in Miller Crescent in my sister's flat in Morningside and in the Netherbow Arts Centre where I worked. I always associate the sea and the shoreline with 'another country' or a spiritual haven of some sort. I remember I used to get the train to Dundee to visit friends and there's a particular part of the coast and sea there in Fife which somehow takes on a hidden or numinous quality. I realise of course that we project this stuff on the world but I've had a few experiences like that where ordinary things take on a different quality and bring longing or connection. I lived for eight years by the sea and our house overlooked the river Forth and the Fife coastline in the distance and some views carry a peculiar charge and have entered my dreams all my life.

Dedicated to Robin Connolly. Robin tells me he remembers a performance back in those days probably with the guys in the Edinburgh band Caedmon at the Charisma Club on Jeffrey Street Edinburgh.

lyrics

MANY NAILS AND GOLD

I took my sad eyes off my journey
I saw my glad eyes look to the sea
I saw the ocean with a new day
I saw my ship waiting free
And many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Were far behind
I'd given them the sign
That said the world was really yours and mine
Now I move into the joy of light and time
That is to be

I used to wander through the dark lands
But I knew the light would keep me on
But every house was bare and haunted
But I knew someone would come along
And many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Were too entrenched for me to break
The clinging costs of my mistakes
Yet I knew someday I would awake
Awake to see

So I'm caught up in the waiting
With my eyes fixed on the dawn
And every face becomes a journey
The hope to make me strong
And many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Many nails and gold
Come down to death, come down to dust
Will never hold me cringing in their lust
Never rise against the thrust
Of that true word
