BOBBY IN THE WIRE

by David Heavenor

/

about

A song about the Irish Republican Bobby Sands who died after a sixty six days hunger strike in Longkesh prison. I caught the second half of Richard Burke's Moral Maze programme on Radio 4 one day when driving into Edinburgh. A former loyalist paramilitary said he had given up his terror campaign when he'd heard Bobby Sands has died because he was affected so much by his willingness to lose his own life for his beliefs. I haven't been able to trace his name as I only caught a short extract from the broadcast. Image: Michael Dawson

lyrics

BOBBY IN THE WIRE

When my world turned blue
I never thought of you
Bobby in the wire
Bobby in the war

Nineteen fifty four
New boy at the door
Bobby in the wire
Bobby in the war

Guess my name is black
Guess my grave is tagged
Guess my sins kick back

Death I’ve never dealt
Graves I’ve never knelt
Bobby in the wire
Bobby in the war

Cells I’ve never trashed
Skin I’ve never slashed
Bobby in the wire
Bobby in the war

Sixty six day done
Rathcoole boy has gone
Bobby in the wire
Bobby in the war

At the mouth of the Foyle
Marcella’s voice sings proud
For Bobby in the wire
Bobby in the War
