LIES TAKE SHAPE

by David Heavenor

/

about

Written when the daily news was full of images from the Bosnian war. Especially brutal was the sight of the carnage after shells fell on market stalls in Sarajevo which was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare.

lyrics

LIES TAKE SHAPE Bosnia 1993

Frost on the window gossamer thin
The wind from the valleys gets under your skin
Words in a headline cut you like a shard
A bomb in a playground, a child's life is devoured

And lies take shape
Lies inflame
Lies absolve you from your Christian name
Launch your lies upon your lips
Your lies will follow you like a pirate ship

They're pointing a camera, a face fills out the frame
The serpent of war lifts up its head again
A woman lies battered, her children lie dead
If it makes you shout out a question, the answers sticks in your head

Send me a sign, oh my sister, send me a sign I pray
Write down a line that I might reach them
In this deadly Passion play

So follow the moment, the rose garden is still
The face of the Saviour stares out from the hill
Into the eyes of the city where they've perfected the art
God is a religion when He's pushed out of your heart

The child lies at the altar, heads bowed down in prayer
The face of her future masked by a black veil
So lay her in clover, wrap her in silk
I dreamed that this darkness is sweeter than milk
