LAYERS OF BLUE

I'm sending a letter by airmail to France
I'm feeling so pleased that it's making me dance
I've got a commission for Yves St. Laurent
'Design me a dress for my girl’s Spring vacances...'

She travelled to Paris through the port of Calais
All the brochures describe it as 'Our best trip away'
The tour guide is going, ‘I'll parle bien francais’
To ease their consumption of Cafe‚ au lait

And Picasso smiles the lonely smile that artists tend to do
He's building up the layers of paint to turn the canvas blue
And he's longing to see you, his question will be
Now why is it that the girl loves the sea?

He sees you, he wants you, you usher him in
L'amour est secret, l'amour est sans fin
And his letters are burning like God's fiery darts
Oh, Jesu I love her in loins and in heart

Now the moments, the passions, the glances undone
Now the silence of rooms and the wringing of palms
The creak on the landing, the cry on the stair
The children stillborn in the nursery air

The lawyers are waiting their rites to perform
The paper is musty, it's tattered and worn
They usher me forward, please sign at the cross
You wait by my side in your Yves St. Laurent

Oh, Jacob, Oh Michael, please heed me I pray
I'll wrestle with you in the night and the day
My heart is a cavern for serpents and snakes
My home is a tent on a desert landscape
